Located in Finistère, the Technopôle Brest-Iroise was established in 1988 for solid economic reasons. As a non-profit organisation, it brings together a network of more than 200 entities (businesses, research centres, graduate schools and professional bodies) and works towards regional economic development through innovation.
The Technopôle Brest-Iroise aims at fostering and strengthening centres of expertise (mission Federate), creating connections and publicising the resources and expertise in our area (mission Animate) and coaching new and innovative businesses (mission Initiate).
One of the main topic of interest of the Technopôle Brest-Iroise are the Sciences and technologies of the sea. Brest plays a major place at European and international levels in this topic:
- 2100 researchers working on this thematic
- Brest, 1st harbour for ship repair
- Host of Pôle Mer Bretagne (Sea Competitiveness Cluster), another partner of the MERiFIC project
- Host of France Energies Marines (French R&D National Institute for marine energies)
Marine renewable energies thus represent a strong and growing domain of excellence of Brest.

WP4 Policy issues
The aim of WP4 is to share experience to gain a better understanding of where barriers currently exist, and how policies can be designed to facilitate the deployment of marine energy schemes. In this action the Technopôle Brest-Iroise supports the Parc Marin d’Iroise in the development of report on public policies and regulatory frameworks on the French side.
WP5 Sustainable Economic Development
Within WP5, the Technopôle Brest-Iroise is leader of a sub-action on the development of the procurement code of practice which aim is to facilitate the integration of local businesses into the marine renewable energy supply chain. In cooperation with Cornwall Council and Cornwall Marine Network, two questionnaires have been developed (one for utilities, one for device developers) in order to focus on the procurement practices.
The document will be published at the end of 2012.
A workshop will also be organised at the beginning of 2013, in the United-Kingdom.
Within this Work package, the Technopôle Brest-Iroise is also working on other topics such as the skills’ development or the ports/infrastructures requirements.
WP6 Stakeholder Engagement
The Technoopôle Brest-Iroise is working closely with Conseil Général du Finistère within WP6. It has identified a pilot action. The aim of this pilot action is to study how citizen financial investment can improve the social acceptance of marine renewable energies as it has been identified in other countries e.g. in Germany or Denmark.
